Areas of Specialisation

Endometriosis – this condition is debilitating and painful. It can impact on daily life as well as fertility. Approximately 1 in 10 women suffer from endometriosis. Symptoms of endometriosis can include pain preceding and during a period that does not respond to pain relief medicine such as Ibuprofen, and can be so severe that it causes nausea and vomiting. Irregular or heavy periods may accompany this condition and it can be the cause of infertility. The causes of endometriosis are varied and still debated amongst scientists, but in most cases excess inflammation and oestrogen are present.

Natural medicine can be used to help metabolise excess oestrogen and dampen excess inflammation, as well as helping with pain relief. There is increasing evidence now for the use of herbs and nutrients to help in the management of this condition.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) – there is much confusion around PCOS, because there are several subtypes. Women often have to cope with hormonal imbalance, blood sugar irregularities, infertility, male pattern hair loss and other uncomfortable physical symptoms.

Natural medicine aims to achieve a healthy body weight and balance hormone, blood sugar and insulin levels. Exciting new evidence has been documented for herbal remedies and lifestyle changes to support women suffering from PCOS.

PMS/Fibroids/Menopause and other women’s health issues – women’s hormones are complicated and amazing. The delicate cyclical balance can be disrupted by stress, thyroid problems, digestive issues, inflammation, immune dysfunction and other factors. This can cause infertility, PMS, difficulty coping with menopause and other problems, such as fibroids, adenomyosis, absent periods or irregular periods.

Herbal and nutritional medicine as well as dietary advice can be of great help in supporting the body back to health and restoring hormone balance.

Thyroid Dysfunction – the thyroid secretes hormones that act on nearly every cell in your body. It controls many things including basal metabolic rate, body temperature, heart rate, cholesterol levels, and growth rates. Because of this the symptoms of dysfunction can be so varied. This important gland can become over or underactive, or sometimes even when the gland functions correctly, your body does not respond normally to the hormones it makes. The causes of thyroid dysfunction can be due to simple nutrient deficiencies, more complicated immune system malfunction or other factors.

Natural medicine aims to support balance in thyroid hormones and hormone function in the body. Laboratory testing is very valuable helping to pinpoint underlying problems. Herbs and nutrients can then be used to correct the problems, whilst long-term lifestyle and dietary advice address the cause for sustained improvement.

Adrenal Function – adrenal fatigue is a term that has gained popularity over the last decade, with the idea that long term stress causes the adrenal glands to burn out. More recent evidence has shown that the adrenal glands don’t burn out as such, but rather, it is a problem with how the body responds to adrenal hormones. HPA-axis dysfunction is a more accurate term for the condition. People with HPA-axis dysfunction may wake in the morning with a low level of energy which starts to rise throughout the day to the point that they find it difficult to go to sleep at night. You’ll eventually fall asleep, but wake up feeling exhausted the next day. Other symptoms include salt cravings, low blood pressure, weakness, depression, vomiting or nausea, amongst others.

Lifestyle advice has a large part to play in this condition, looking at stress minimisation techniques and ensuring the body is well-nourished with the key nutrients needed, such as magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin C. Herbal medicines can reduce symptoms, help the body recover and adapt to stress and correct sleeping patterns.
